What is FreeFiona.com? This is the official website of Free Fiona, an international organization campaigning to Sony/Epic for the release of Fiona Apple's new album, Extraordinary Machine.
Is Fiona Apple or Sony involved with this campaign?  No.  Dave Muscato and other Fiona apple fans from FionaHasWings.com started this campaign and run it independently.
Why hasn't Sony/Epic released the album? Fiona Apple finished recording Extraordinary Machine in May of 2003, but Sony/Epic executives did not think it would sell enough copies to justify the cost of promoting and distributing it. Rather than spend more money, Sony/Epic decided to cut their losses and not release the album at this time.
Why does Sony/Epic think her new album won't sell? Didn't her last two albums go platinum? Yes, Tidal and When the Pawn... are both RIAA certified platinum in the United States. Sony Music recently replaced chairman and CEO Tommy "Love ya, baby!" Mottola with former NBC president Andrew Lack, a businessman with no prior music experience. He immediately shifted Sony Music's focus to pop and hip-hop acts that are traditionally bigger sellers. The master recordings of Extraordinary Machine were sent to a warehouse, where they remain to this day.
How can I help? Send something with an apple theme - a fake apple, a photo OF an apple, a piece of paper with an apple sticker, a sketch of an apple, even an apple pie - be creative! - to Andy Lack at Sony with a note attached. You can write a real letter or just scribble "Free Fiona!" on the envelope - whatever you want.

On January 24th, 2005 (see next question), send your themed-package or letter to:

Andrew Lack
550 Madison Avenue
32nd Floor
New York, NY 10022

I HAVE BEEN ADVISED *NOT* TO MAIL REAL APPLES FOR HEALTH AND LIABILITY AS WELL AS WASTE AND ECONOMIC REASONS.  PLEASE RESPECT OUR POLICY!  THANKS!

What does this site do, exactly? FreeFiona is the brainchild of the folks at FionaHasWings.com, a Fiona Apple discussion forum.

We at www.FreeFiona.com are organizing a massive, international, week-long "Apple" campaign to show Sony Music that Fiona Apple fans are still out here and waiting for her next release.

1)   All over the country, we are setting up booths on college campuses where students can write a note to Sony Music, which we will then tuck inside a plastic apple and mail to Sony on January 24th.   See our donations page for more details.

2)  We are recruiting die-hard fans to protest in front of the Sony headquarters in L.A. and New York City on the last day of our campaign week (January 28th, 2005).  We hope to raise enough money to get t-shirts for the protestors, and apples to give out to passers-by, in addition to posters, flyers, etc.

IMPORTANT!!  We are timing our campaign so that all the Apple-themed packages arrive in the same week.  PLEASE mail your package ON or VERY CLOSE TO January 24th, 2005.

Who pays for this site? You do!  This site and our entire campaign are funded completely by donations from Fiona Apple fans.
If you would like to support FreeFiona.com, please check out our donation page.
If you would like to see a breakdown of the cost of the campaign, click here.  There is also a list of everyone who has donated to the cause!
PLEASE donate!
We want to get national attention for this campaign and if we do this right, we can.
Where can I get a fake apple to send in myself? Try these.  They come in sets of three, so you can give the other two apples to friends and have them stick a note inside, too!
Do I have to register to participate in the Free Fiona campaign? No!  Just send Andy Lack an apple-themed campaign on January 24th.

If you are donating to our campaign, we ask for your first and last name, city, state, and country.  We will post this information on our Donations page under "Our efforts were made possible by..."  If you would prefer that your name not be listed, just let us know.  You do not have to provide your name, city, state or country if you do not want to.
Will I get unsolicited emails/"spam?" No!  You never even tell us your email address.  You just send a letter or package directly to Sony.
Does it cost anything to join? You don't register, you don't join, you don't pay.  Donations are voluntary, but GREATLY appreciated.
How else can I help? Spread the word!  Our goal is to overflow Sony's mailboxes with memorable "requests" for Fiona's new album in an effort to convince Sony executives that there are, in fact, many thousands of Fiona fans out there waiting for her next release.

If you are interested in hosting a campus booth in your city, please email me.
